Social Fabric embraces the craft of sewing for positive social and environmental impact. It is a hub of creativity where people come together in their atelier in Zurich to learn all there is to know about sewing or to upgrade their skills. Whilst Social Fabric welcomes everyone, its focus is to encourage the integration of refugees into society and the workplace in Switzerland and the promotion of a sustainable textile industry.
For refugees to find employment is extremely challenging, making the possibility to integrate within Swiss society almost impossible. Social Fabric has changed this and not only connects refugees to employment, they also offer opportunities for refugees to share their skills and to learn German. It is not just a community they have created, it’s more like extended family.
Social fabric is equally environmentally conscious and only use fabrics that have a small social and ecological footprint. They offer courses so you can learn to repair, alter and upcycle your clothes. In their shop you can buy anything from scarves, to computer cases and upcycled sail products.
Another side of their business is to offer quality, sustainable merchandising for companies. Whether it be custom print t-shirts, computer cases or pouches their range is quite extensive and original. Most of it is made in their atelier in Zurich otherwise it is outsourced to social projects such as Freeset who employ and support former prostitutes in India to sew and produce t-shirts and accessories produced from ecologically friendly fabrics.
