Wildbiene & Partner make it possible for every household with a balcony or garden to become a beekeeper of wild mason bees regardless of whether you live in the inner-city or in the countryside. Mason bees are absolutely harmless, do not sting and are disinterested in food and sweet drinks. As bee populations are threatened globally wreaking havoc on the bio diversity of our planet, Wildbiene & Partner has created a totally safe, simple and genius solution to support the Swiss Bee population.
If you have a balcony or a garden you are the perfect candidate to invest in a little bee house and 25 mason bees all of which will be delivered to you by post. Depending on the model, prices range from 120CHF to 175CHF. Once you have installed the little house and released the bees, they can get to work. Each bee can pollinate up to 2500 flowers a day and up to 40000 in their short lifetime. Whilst they are busy pollinating they are also creating the nests for the next generation in the little wooden tubes of the bee house. By the end of summer, the work is done and the larvae are well protected to remain throughout the winter until they hatch in the following spring. It couldn’t be simpler and yet it’s impact on the biodiversity of our environment is huge.
It’s wonderful to watch the bees as they work so hard to fill their nests. Being totally harmless it is a great way for kids to gain a deeper understanding of how nature works and its importance to our own livelihood. In some models there is an observation drawer where you can watch the development of the larvae.
As the autumn approaches Wildbiene & Partner offer a winter service for 25 CHF. You send back the bee home and they will look after the larvae until they harvest in the spring. They clean the home for parasites, send you statistics of how many bees your house harvested and if any other species had used the house. The harvested bees are given to farmers as this enables a sustainable way of pollination of fruit trees. They will send you back your house with a new population free of charge. You can also choose to keep your house throughout the winter.
It’s no surprise that already more than 25000 Wildbiene & Partner bee houses have been sold. If you want to contribute to the biodiversity of the planet having a bee house is a really valuable, practical and impactful way of going about it. Their website is not in English but you can buy a bee house directly on their online shop and contact them by email with any questions you may have. Their products are also on sale in France and Germany under www.beehome.net
